THE HUNT
A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH
The contests between predators and prey are the most dramatic
events in nature. For both sides, it’s a matter of life and death, and
the outcome is seldom a foregone conclusion. The contestants’
strategies are shaped by where they live. So each chapter looks at
a principal habitat, whether savannah, jungle or ocean, and how
predators and prey respond to the particular challenges.
Some of the fascinating stories include desert
lions that use the cloak of sea mist to ambush
oryx, false killer whales that use teamwork and
sonar to pinpoint prey in the open ocean, Portia the smart spider that
alters her hunting strategy to match her prey, and the octopus that
walks across land to reach fish trapped in rock pools.
The final chapter goes behind the scenes to recount the
adventures of the production teams as they themselves stalk
their quarry – and are sometimes stalked – revealing how the key
sequences were filmed.
Illustrations include stills from the latest 4K, high-speed and
time-lapse video, depicting never-before-photographed behaviour.
