Scotland’s voters rejected
independence from the rest of the United Kingdom
in a referendum. More than 84% of the population
voted, with No outvotingYes by 55.25% to 44.65%.
Ahead of the referendum, Prime Minister David
Cameron promised greater powers for a devolved
Scotland if its citizens rejected independence. That
was followed by a speech immediately after the
vote in which he pledged greater powers for
English regions and English votes for English
laws. The referendum was followed by a surge
in popularity for the Scottish National Party,
which won 56 seats in the general election in May
the following year, with the other three main
parties taking just one seat each. Following the
Brexit vote, in which the UK as a whole voted
to leave, but Scotland voted to remain, First
Minister Nicola Sturgeon has drafted a bill to
reconsider independence.

World leaders gathered in Paris
to agree a global climate change
pact at the COP 21 (the 21st
Conference of the Parties)
summit. For the rst time, the
195 participating countries
agreed by consensus to reduce
carbon emissions; by Christmas
of last year, 175 nations had
signed the agreement. It came
into force when 55 countries,
representing 55% of total
global greenhouse gas
emissions, had deposited their
instruments of rati cation
with the UN.This occurred on
5 October 2016.China and the
US signed up early in a joint
statement, but President-elect
DonaldTrump is reportedly
seeking ways to reverse
Obama’s decision.
