UnitedAirlines flights were hijacked on
the same day, now known throughout the
world as 9/11.Two were flown into the
TwinTowers of theWorld Trade Center in Manhattan,
one into the Pentagon nearWashington and the
fourth in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, killing a total of
2,996 people.The 19 terrorists were members of
al-Qaeda, which was based and had training camps in
Afghanistan.A month after the attacks, US President
GeorgeW. Bush launched attacks on the country in
Operation Enduring Freedom.
A year of celebrations
to mark The Queen’s
half-century as the
head of the UK and
Commonwealth
countries peaked on
the Golden Jubilee
weekend in early
June with a series of
events attended by
people across the
country. Although
some commentators
had questioned the
relevance of the
jubilee to
contemporary society,
subsequent analysis
suggested the events
were a huge success.

events of 2012,

London Olympics.
