he UK economy appears to be recovering
strongly – gone is the air of gloom that pervaded
a year ago and growth this year is predicted to
be the strongest in Europe. In our ‘Analysis’
article, starting on page 6, Jonathan Gregson
examines the recovery and what is needed to
ensure it is sustained.
Brazil’s economy, by contrast, has slowed sharply and the FIFA
World Cup, which kicks off in June, and 2016’s Olympic Games
risk exposing social tensions in the country rather than showcasing
its attractions to tourists and investors. Edward Russell-Walling
discusses how these issues are being addressed in our ‘Market
Focus’, starting on page 9.
The recent cap on long term care costs, and the latest pension
plans announced in the March Budget, have put the issue of
retirement – and how to pay for it – firmly in the spotlight. We
examine the Budget in detail on page 4, while our ‘In Your Interest’
article on page 12 assesses the impact of the Care Bill.
Mark and Caroline Cook founded their charity, Hope and
Homes for Children, after they saw children living in distressing
conditions in a Sarajevo orphanage. The main aim of the charity is
to find homes for such children. Mark tells his uplifting story in our
‘Foundation’ article on page 20.
I do hope the articles in this latest issue of
