25TH ANNIVERSARY
J
The opening ceremony of
the London Olympic Games showcased
the UK’s transformation from a green and
pleasant land to a modern digital economy
via the industrial revolution.The Games
also demonstrated a transformation in
our medal fortunes – the country won a
record-breaking 29 golds and 65 medals
overall. Four years later, at Rio 2016,we
surpassed this medal haul with 67.An
army of 70,000 Games Makers and other
volunteers made the Games and the
Paralympic Games,which was staged
two week’s later, among the most
successful ever, in both atmosphere
and attendance gures.
The UK’s sportsmen and women make it a month to

2011
Growing unrest in
Tunisia towards the
end of 2010 continued
in 2011 with the
long-standing President
of Tunisia, Zine
al-Abidine Ben Ali,
being ousted from
office. A mix of
peaceful and violent
revolutionary
demonstrations then
spread quickly through
the Arab world,
affecting countries
including Egypt, Libya,
Yemen and Syria.
Many of the effects
are still being
felt in 2017.
THE ARAB
SPRING
In February of the following year, the
European Stability Mechanism was
created to act as a lender of last resort
to struggling economies, able to lend
up to €500 billion. The rescue packages
were generally accompanied by
severe austerity measures
designed to reduce debt and
restore nancial stability.
However, there were signi cant
protests against these packages
in Greece, Italy and Spain,
and they are now seen as
a key factor in the rise of
both right- and left-wing
protest parties in Europe.
