he general election is approaching, and the
economy, its performance and outlook, will be
a battleground for the political parties. In our
Analysis feature, we assess the performance
of the coalition and examine what the next

Forward guidance on the outlook for the economy was one of the
key tools promoted by Mark Carney when he took over as governor
of the Bank of England in 2013. Providing consistent advice has,
however, proved very challenging and many economists now
question whether it has outlived its usefulness. Jonathan Gregson
considers the arguments for and against.
The pension changes announced over the past year will have a
signi cant impact on retirement planning. Our In Your Interest
feature o ers a guide to the changes and explains how to make the
best of the new rules.
Meanwhile, technology and globalisation are creating an explosion
in the number and size of cities worldwide, with megacities – those
with more than 10 million inhabitants – rising from 10 in 1990 to a
predicted 40-plus by 2030. Our Sector Watch article examines the
opportunities and challenges this increase will provide.
