The IraqWar began
about 90 minutes after the expiry of the
US-imposed deadline for the Iraqi
dictator Saddam Hussein to leave the
country. GeorgeW. Bush led the invasion.
He was supported by the UK, while
there was more limited involvement
from a few other countries. President
Bush said the objective was to was‘to free
its people and defend the world from
grave danger’. US troops completed their
withdrawal from the country in 2011,
although Hussein was captured and
tried in 2005 for crimes against his
people, including mass killing. He was
executed a year later following an
unsuccessful appeal.

OVEMBER
2004
President George W.
Bush narrowly won a
second term in office,
seeing off Democrat
challenger Senator
John F. Kerry. The Iraq
War and terrorism
were key issues in the
campaign, with
casualties among US
troops rising and
a lack of evidence of
the existence of
weapons of mass
destruction. The result
was decided by just
one state, Ohio, which
came out for Bush.
