both in the UK and overseas. The

Foundation also supports the hospice

movement, charities in aid of cancer and,

more recently, those helping people of all

ages with mental health issues.The

Foundation’s aim is to make a positive and

lasting difference to people’s lives.

Approximately 80% of the money

raised goes to UK-based charities; the

remaining 20% to overseas charities,

especially those that help young people

to escape from poverty and neglect.

The Foundation makes hundreds of

one-off grants every year, as well as

making significant funding commitments

for several years at a time to some

charities, covering the salaries of staff or

the cost of a specific project. This

provides the charities with much greater

stability and enables them to plan for the

long term. Here are some of the main

charities it has supported.

Every day in the UK seven people

aged 13 to 24 are diagnosed with

cancer

.Teenage CancerTrust is the

only charity in the UK dedicated to

providing expert treatment and

support for these young people. It

provides world-class care and

support in specialist units, local

hospitals and homes across the UK.

Chief Executive Siobhan Dunn

says:‘We’ve been so fortunate to

have been able to work in

partnership with St. James’s Place

over the past seven years and are

incredibly grateful for their support.

The money raised has made, and

continues to make, such a difference

to young people with cancer.’

Over the past seven years, staff

and Partners from St. James’s Place

have raised more than

£1 million for the charity. This has

been invested in four areas.

The first is specialTeenage

CancerTrust units within NHS

hospitals across the UK.These

enable young people to be treated

alongside people of their own age

in an environment that feels more

like home than a hospital. Second

is nurses who are experts in

teenage and young adult cancer

care.Third, youth support

coordinators help young people

and their families cope with all that

cancer brings. Fourth is an

education programme that helps

young people understand more

about cancer and to feel more

confident talking about it.
